About Montana

The American state of Montana is situated in the northwestern region of the country and consists of several mountain ranges, including the Rocky Mountains. The northern region of the state borders Canada. Montana is one of the largest states in the country as it’s the fourth biggest in size, but it’s the seventh smallest when it comes to population as it’s home to about only a million people.

The state capital is Helena, and the largest city is Billings. Some of the other major cities include Billings, Great Falls, Butte, Bozeman, Missoula, Kalispell, Glasgow, Anaconda, Belgrade, and Dillon. Montana became the 41st state to join the Union when it was admitted back in 1889.

Some of the most popular outdoor sites to visit include Glacier National Park, Yellowstone National Park, Granite Peak, Makoshika State Park, Flathead Valley, Big Hole Valley, Bitterroot Valley, Hell’s Creek, the Little Bighorn National Monument, the Lewis and Clark Caverns, the National Bison Range, and Nez Perce National Historical Park.

There are also quite a few Native American Indian reservations in the state. These include the Fort Peck, Fort Belknap, Northern Cheyenne, Crow, Rocky Boy's, Blackfeet, and Flathead Reservations. The scenery is amazing in most of the state due to the scenic valleys, mountains, rock formations, forests, plains, and rivers and the landscape has yielded some amazing dinosaur discoveries over the years.

Because the state is so varied in vegetation, landscape, and geography, the weather can also be pretty varied, so it’s best to check the region you’re going to before visiting as some areas can be quite hot and others pretty cold.
Getting into Montana is simple by car and it’s a good way to travel around as you visit the sites as it’ll allow you to take in the wonderful scenery. If you’d like to fly into the state, there’s a major airport in the areas of Bozeman, Missoula, and Billings. There are quite a few smaller regional airports for domestic flights in places like Helena and Butte.

Getting there by railroad is another fantastic way to view the breathtaking countryside and railroads have been an important mode of transportation since the 1880s. Some of the towns that have stations are Whitefish, Libby, West Glacier, East Glacier Park, Essex, Browning, Shelby, Cut Bank, Havre, Glasgow, Malta, and Wolf Point.

There aren’t any major league pro sports teams in Montana, but there are quite a few minor-league franchises for sports such as baseball. College sports are also pretty popular in the area. If you want to keep active yourself, there are plenty of outdoor activities to choose from such as camping, hiking, biking, mountain climbing, fishing, hunting, swimming, snowmobiling, canoeing, kayaking, and water skiing.

In the winter, Montana is an excellent place to ski and there are numerous resorts to choose from, such as Bear Paw Ski Bowl, Big Sky Resort, Bridger Bowl Ski Area, Lookout Pass, Maverick Mountain, Red Lodge Mountain, Teton Pass Ski Area, and Turner Mountain Ski Resort. Dog-sledding is also a great activity to check out once the snow falls.

Finding a suitable place to stay is no problem at all as Montana offers accommodations throughout the state that fit in all price ranges. When it comes time to eat, the restaurants offer a good selection of local dishes and there are quite a few international establishments to choose from.

Montana has some of the most spectacular scenery in the world actually and it’s a fantastic place for people of all ages to see and to take part in some of the numerous activities it has to offer. While the outdoors in one giant playground, there are enough interesting historical sites and museums to learn about the local culture.
